Golf irons

Those people who are hitting golf irons the same way they hit with woods may not be getting the desired effect. Follow these guidelines when hitting with irons:

• Hit down – When using golf irons, a person can strike the ball better if he hits down on the ball. Doing this will create ample lift. It also will create backspin. This is especially important for those people who are attempting to hit their shot onto the green.

• Practice – Lay a coin just next to a practice ball. After taking a swing, look to see where the divot is. A good swing with golf irons will leave the divot just ahead of where the ball lies. However, if the divot is behind the ball, there still is work to be done to perfect the swing.

• Don’t scoop – When using golf irons, there is sometimes an urge to swing with a scooping action. This should be avoided, as a golfer’s arms must remain straight. A golfer should use the iron’s built-in loft to get the ball up in the air. A person who attempts to get the ball in the air using his own scooping motion is likely to find that the ball does not get as much lift as it would if he simply let the club do what it needed to.

By practicing using golf irons, a golfer is able to get a better feel for exactly what he needs to do in order hit his best shots while on the golf course.
